You might not agree with us, but as they say the truth always remain sour.There are many Bollywood films which went on to become classics but were actually doomed at the  box office. Have a look at a list of such films.

1. Silsila (1981)


The Amitabh Bachachan, Rekha and Jaya Bahaduri Love triangle directed by Yash Chopra,which is allegedly based on the real life love triangle of Amitabh-Jaya-Rekha. Though the film has gained strong cult following today, but did only average business at the box office, much below than expectations. The film gave super hit songs like “Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum”, “Rang Barse Bhige Chunar Wali,and “Neela Aasman”.

2. Lamhe (1991)

Anil Kapoor and Sridevi starer, over the years the film is considered as one of the finest Indian films directed by Late Yash Chopra was actually proved to be a  commercial failure in India, but it became a success in the U.K., following which  Sridevi received acclaim for her double role, and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

3. Andaz Apna Apna(1994)

Amir Khan and Salman Khan starer, the film went to win many applauses but was an average grosser at the box office.The refreshing comedy of the 90’s in which todays two megastars ,Dabang Khan and Mr Perfectionist were seen tickling the nerve by their soothing acting. The film over the years have gained the popularity and thus the director of the film Rajkumar Santoshi is planning  a  sequel of the film, which will retain the original characters Amar and Prem.

4. Dil Se.. (1998)

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Kirala, Priti Zinta. The film was Romantic thriller set in the  in the backdrop of terrorism, directed by Mani Ratnam. The film is considered an example of Indian Parallel Cinema. It is the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts.  It won two National Film Awards and  seven Filmfare Awards,later, but was a flop at the box office.The film gave us  the famous song  “Chaiyya Chaiyya”, which was  lavishly choreographed on the top of a moving train.

5. Haasil (2003)

It’s a Tigmanshu Dhulia film, starring Jimmy Shergill, Hrishita Bhatt,Irfan Khan,Ashutosh Rana.  Irfan Khan won Filmfare award for Best actor in negative role for the film .Over the years the film has gained cult following, but unfortunately it was an underrated film.

6. Swades (2004)


The film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi (debutante of that year) directed by  Ashutosh Gowariker.  The film was based on the Indian who went abroad for a job and a few later came back to complete a project but meanwhile he explores his love for his country. The film  was a failure at the Indian box office, but was successful overseas and received critical acclaim and a cult following over the years.
